Overview

Armed conflict and political instability in this West African nation added to the suffering of 3.5 million Malians already facing severe food shortages. Over 520,000 people have fled northern Mali in search of safe haven, and another 330,000 have been internally displaced. Mali’s crisis has led to the collapse of public services, especially health care and education. The International Rescue Committee is there to provide lifesaving assistance.

How we help
  • The IRC delivers vital aid and support, including clean drinking water, water treatment kits and health care supplies, to 170,000 people.
  • The IRC treats children suffering from malnutrition in 69 health centers, training community volunteers to identify symptoms and provide follow-up care.
  • We help children recover from the trauma of life in a war zone by providing counseling to them and to families and by organizing safe places for children to play and reestablish a sense of normalcy.
  • The IRC works to reopen schools closed because of flooding or armed conflict and trains teachers to support children affected by war.
