Overview

The International Rescue Committee began relief operations in Rwanda immediately following the 1994 genocide, restoring infrastructure and providing emergency supplies.

Today, the IRC continues to support Rwandans by providing accessible health care, and by encouraging development and good governance.

How we help
  • The IRC is keeping children safe and healthy with community-based health care.
  • We support the work of 25 health centers in their efforts to lower child mortality rates and stop the spread of disease and implement new health programs at the local and national levels.
  • The IRC empowers women and their families to gain economic independence by offering village saving and loan programs.
  • We distribute seeds to local farmers with the aim to eliminate childhood malnutrition.
  • The IRC promotes peace and security by increasing access to justice, raising awareness of human rights, and strengthening legal support for victims of violence, especially women.
  • The IRC works to reestablish trust in government among vulnerable groups like women and children, and we increase their awareness of national laws and assist local mediation groups that aid in their protection.
