Crisis in Syria

Nearly four years after the outbreak of the Syria conflict, the International Rescue Committee is assisting Syrian refugees and Syrians trapped by the violence inside the country. We provide medical and other critical aid, ensure refugees have access to their legal rights, and help women and girls who are victims of violence. The International Rescue Committee is marshalling a humanitarian response to help the thousands of people crossing Syria’s borders every day, as well as those trapped by the violence inside the country. We provide medical and other critical aid, help women and girl victims of violence, and ensure refugees have access to their legal rights.

How we help
  • The IRC is currently providing support to Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.
  • Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by conflicts inside Syria and Iraq are receiving winter emergency kits from the IRC to help them survive the cold weather hitting the region.
  • In Syria, we have reached close to 900,000 vulnerable people with medical and emergency supplies. We work directly in camps for displaced Syrians in the northern part of the country, providing clean water, sanitation, education, and emergency kits to tens of thousands of Syrians in need. We also provide targeted emotional and educational support for women and children in the camps. We also operate four static and two mobile clinics in northern Syria, and have already reached more than 30,000 Syrians with primary care. The IRC also works closely with Syrian partners to ensure aid reaches those in most need across the country.
  • In Jordan, the IRC provides reproductive health care, cash assistance, and social services to refugee families, as well as counseling and other support for survivors of sexual violence. In Jordan’s refugee camps, the IRC provides support for refugee women and girls and helps to reunite children who've crossed the border alone, with their families.
  • In Lebanon, the IRC operates four Women's Centers for refugees and vulnerable Lebanese. We provide counseling, medical consultations, and group activities. We are also helping hundreds of refugee families and Lebanese living in communities with large refugee populations with cash assistance enabling them to pay for rent, food, utilities and other essentials. We are also launching a major education campaign for refugee children in Lebanon, and are providing job training and placement projects for adults.
  • In Iraq, the IRC is working in refugee camps to reach the most vulnerable. We operate women's centers, provide education, water and sanitation services, and ensure refugees have free access to legal assistance. We are also expanding our work with Iraq's urban refugee population, many of whom have difficulty accessing jobs, housing, education and health services.
