The International Rescue Committee is preparing to open a reception center in northern Lesbos, often the first stop for thousands of exhausted refugees seeking safety in Europe. Built along the island’s coast, the site – “Windy Ridge” – is just steps from the beach where thousands of refugees from warring countries arrived this year.

"I pray no one ever had to come the way we did," says a young Afghan girl. "We suffered so much and our feet were sore. I dream to some day go to school in a place where there is no more war; where I can play quietly and sleep peacefully."
