On the 8th of February 2019, The Global Alliance for Urban Crises launched a series of knowledge products on urban displacement at the Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Week in Geneva. The five crucial products support humanitarian and development actors, local authorities, the private sector and academia to drive change and adapt humanitarian action to an increasingly urban world and were developed with support from EU Humanitarian Aid.

Adapting humanitarian action to an urban world is crucial at a time when the majority of the world’s 68.5 million displaced people live in cities and urban crises are becoming more common. To achieve this goal, the Alliance was established at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 as a global community that joins international, national, and local constituents to enable cities and communities to prevent, prepare for, and respond to urban crisis. As a founding member of the Alliance, the International Rescue Committee is committed to ensuring that local communities and their leaders are at the heart of determining the response to urban crisis and equipped with the knowledge to do so. The products include:

  1. Urban profiling for better responses to humanitarian crises;
  2. Strengthening engagement between local governments and humanitarian and development actors;
  3. Urban displacement from different perspective, an overview of approaches;
  4. Building urban resilience in the face of crisis; and
  5. Urban Competency Framework for Humanitarian Action

In an increasingly urban world, new and collaborative humanitarian responses are vital if durable solutions are to be found to the world’s biggest challenges. By convening a diverse group of professions and presenting innovative ways to approach urban crises, the Alliance strives to improve multi-stakeholder collaboration, share best practices, and provide the necessary tools to build stronger, more resilient cities.
