Ukraine crisis Crisis Watch

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is having devastating consequences for Ukraine's civilian population and humanitarian needs are expected to rise. The IRC launched an immediate emergency response to the crisis and is working with partners in Poland and Ukraine.

Women and children fleeing Ukraine are at grave risk

  • The vast majority of the over 4 million refugees that have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion are women and children.

  • In crisis settings, women and girls face particular and disproportionate risks, including from violence, exploitation and abuse.

  • Over 2 million have been forced to flee across borders into neighbouring Moldova, Poland and other European states.

  • An estimated 80,000 women will give birth in the next three months in Ukraine – many of them without access to critical maternal health care if the crisis continues to shut down essential services.

  • The IRC is calling for international donors and leaders to prioritise the support and protection of women and girls.
